It is extremely important to remember that when training a dog the safety of the trainer is of paramount importance. In the process of training a dog for protection, to be a guard dog, or for attack purposes, the trainer must be in absolute control of the dog's aggressive behaviors with no question.

Be sure your dog is groomed well. A bath and a brush are two key ingredients. Some people spend a fortune on dog show equipment and win nothing. Some people spend nothing (or hardly so) and win a lot. There is a difference in the amount of equipment you will need depending on the breed that you have. Poodles require a LOT more expertise and equipment to groom than German Shorthairs! A minimum for most people is a grooming table and a kit with brushes, wipe rags, etc.

PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG! BRING ALONG PLASTIC BAGS AND USE THEM. People who don't do this are giving all dog shows and dog people a bad name and restricting our rights more and more at different motel chains.

If you have a young puppy or a dog that may be coming down with something and you're not sure, do not walk him in the public areas where other dogs are. Try to find an isolated area.

Be at the ring on time. (Always buy a catalog, it benefits the show giving club and it tells you where to go and when to be there!)

Get show photos if you take a win (blue ribbon or better) especially if the win is worth points. This is your record of achievement just in case the AKC or whatever show club is putting on the event mixes up the records or the records get lost.

Get in a good supply of peppermints (mints absorb the extra adrenalin smell from your own breath and will help to keep your dog calmer if you are nervous).

Watch your dog at all times around the ring, you may have a "good dog" but not everyone else does!

Keep your mouth closed and your eyes open.

Take along your vaccination records. All of them. The best idea is to always keep an extra copy in your vehicle.

Invest in a crate. For the larger breeds, a wire crate is best. Many of the larger breeds are coated and will get hot in an "airline type" of kennel, where a wire crate will give them more air..

Join your local Kennel Club! The people there can help you learn to show. And join your Breed Club if at all possible. These people will help you to learn to show and if you are a member, you will also know when the local shows are coming up!

Depending on the job in hand, so for your training sessions you may be best to use a high voice that sounds fun, that way you are setting the scene for your dog, saying here comes fun and games, again throughout the training session keep the voice fun. You may like to use tone as a negative as well, here you have a lower tone for the command "No" this, the dog will pick up.

Never shout as all this does is add confusion to your dog. Praising, this is the best tip of all, regardless of what training you under take with your dog praise works. Dogs want praise, they wish to please you. Praise shows them that through what they have done you are happy, please with it; they love this above nearly anything else. Always praise the correct response from your dog. If they are learning something new, praise what they did right, each step in the right direction is good. Training sessions need to be fun and fairly short say ten to twenty minutes long.

As you get to know your dog better you will see when to end the session. End on a good note, even if that means you go back to a few basics of course you should have praise your dog for all their hard work that session. Sessions should ideally be a few times a day, three to four would be great. Whatever training program you use remember to stick with it and not chop and change the program or this leads to a confused dog and owner.

The last tip is dogs keep on learning, they do not stop at a set age. Keep it fun, it is not an exam dog's love to have fun and will learn well given the right motivation.

Peanut Agility Trial blunders Hoodoo 26 to 27 October 2008

I think this is true test of agility peanut second. Technically, well ... We only have a couple of runs right in February after my knee surgery (in this scooter!), But I ended up scratching so that really does not matter. Peanut is great in this process! For the first time I was actually pulling the ring! I have some 'eyes with dew when I go back to how it was a few years (* see below for their history agility think). Qd 7 of 8 runs. What I do not get slideshowswas entirely my fault. He finished his outstanding Novice Jumpers (NJC O-) title and her Novice Chances title (NCC)! Way to go nuts! ______________________ * For the uninitiated, should any problem with agility nut had. She was my first agility dog and it was with some methods that really work for her has not yet taught slideshow. It 'got to the point that if we went into the ring began to tremble and try to run and hide. He went into a sort of an early retirement scheme if I Dazzle. Once I learnedmore training, I started again with strictly positive on methods. Nothing he does is always regarded as wrong. You can jump out of contacts, off course, to break the lines ..... you get the idea. If outside, and fun, everything is fine with me. So after several years of hard work is what we have! We need to do a job (will not be continuing to overcome obstacles), but the improvement in my opinion, is remarkable. I can dig some old video of her at some point...

Dog Training Collars - Are They Really Any Good?

Dog training collars come in all shapes and sizes and for all breeds and ages of dog. You fit a training collar around your dogs neck (assuming they're OK with that and don't immediately pull it off), and then it is either remote controlled or has a sound activation.

Some "dog training" collars are actually just ordinary collars, and the makers will encourage you to attach a lead to them and give it a yank when the dog misbehaves. I disagree with this approach to dog training, partly because it's dangerous and partly because it generally doesn't do much good unless done perfectly.

Of the other types of dog training collar, they fit into two broad categories: anti-bark and general purpose.

The anti-bark dog training collars are sound activated. They have a small box of unpleasant smelling perfume just under the dogs nose, and a little sensor which detects when the dog barks. As he (or she) barks, a small squirt of the perfume is released, irritating the dog. The idea is that eventually the dog will begin to associate the unpleasant smell with barking, and so stop barking.

While this device has it's roots based in the psychological bell ringing dog studies conducted by Pavlov, general consensus amongst dog trainers is that these dog training collars are to be avoided. Good training regimes should reward dogs for good behavior instead of punishing bad behaviour.

The other type of collar is very similar, except instead of releasing bad smelling perfume, these training collars may impart a small electric shock to the dog wearing it when you press a button on a remote control. The advice given by the manufacturers is that you can discipline your dog from afar, if he's about to chew up someone else's football, ruin some plants or is running around a kids playground barking his head off and you can't catch him.

Again, I'd recommend that you avoid these dog training collars. Electrocuting your dog is not the way to get him to behave, and any collars that you put on him (or her) could just make him more agitated and excitable, and exacerbate his behavior, not control it. Imagine if you were angry and letting off some steam, and someone started shocking you? You wouldn't be very happy, would you?

The best approach to dog training isn't collars, it's a full and complete training system developed by professionals, which encourages a strong relationship between you and the dog, and rewards for good behavior. There's plenty of professional advice available so you don't have to resort to dog training collars.
