3 Effective Sled Dog Training Tips

Sled dog training sessions can be improved further by organizing your training sessions to best suit your dog. While this type of training can start while your dog is still a puppy, you still need to keep in mind that there are some factors to consider before you start to train your dog for carting or sledding.

1) Your dog needs to be in great physical condition. He should be able to pull substantial weight via a cart or a sled. If your dog is in poor physical condition, you might end up injuring him.

2) Prepare all the stuff you need to use for your sled dog training sessions. A harness is needed to attach the sled to your dog.

Make sure you buy a harness that's a perfect fit for your dog. If your dog is still a puppy, an adjustable harness which can fit dogs ranging from puppies to fully grown dogs will be great, especially if it's designed for the breed of your dog.

A limited slip collar is needed. You should also find good training collars which won't choke your dog.

Belly bands, double ended training leashes, leather gloves and running shoes as well as the sled or cart are necessary for sled dog training sessions. You must have all of these materials before starting with your first training session.

3) Prepare a first aid kit as well as lots of water. Your dog needs to be properly hydrated before starting the training session.

You can do this by going to a cool shaded area where you can hydrate your dog first. Then, attach the harness, belly bands and training collar to your dog. Do this carefully.

The first aid kit should have all the necessary items you and your dog need in case of accidents. Consult your veterinarian so you know which items to include in the kit.

The 3 tips above will be great for your sled dog training sessions. Just make sure you don't overtrain your dog as this can have negative effects to the obedience, behavior and learning time of your dog. Always keep in mind that a dog is best given treats after a good deed.
