Yukon is a beautiful two-year neutered male black and white Shih Tzu / poodle mix, who was at the Baldwin Park Shelter October 16th abandoned. Quiet and loving Yukon weighs about fifteen pounds and seems to be housebroken and some exercise. Very nice scruffy this guy is hyper allergenic hair and scales. Yukon is a wonderful dog who will make an excellent companion and his best friend to the family apartment house as well as people in privatehome.
5 Levels of Dog Training
When commencing your dog training, it is best that you know all of the different options you have available to you. It is possible to find many types of training, in lots of different places. These types of training lessons can vary in price with each one of them having something different to offer both you and your dog.
Puppy Preschool
As the name suggests this first type of lessons can be known as puppy preschool. Typically this course is meant for puppies aged from 6 weeks to 5 months old. These puppy preschool classes will in general last for 6 to 8 weeks, although they can last longer depending on the average age of the puppies in the class and the class size. The intermediate training generally lasts up to 10 weeks, and is intended for dogs that are 5 months or older. Advanced Dog Training
The next type of course is known as the advanced dog training course. This course can last up to 10 weeks and should only be attempted by those owners and dogs that have completed their intermediate training. Canine Good Citizen Training
The Canine Good Citizen training for dogs is the final course. In order to pass this course, your dog will be taught the 10 essential aspects. This course has strict entry criteria and is meant for those dogs and owners that have completed all the previous courses.
The tests for this course are tough and your dog will only be passed if he is very well behaved. The length of this particular course depends on how quickly it takes your dog to be ready and passes the required tests.

Potty Training Your Dog - Stop the Indoor Messes
If only your dog could use the toilet just like you do. That would make life so much easier. But as most dog owners are aware potty training your dog means teaching them to do their business outside, not on the living room carpet. Potty training can take some time and patience and a great deal of your success will depend on the dog, but once he's house broken the effort will have been well worth it.
Probably the easiest method for potty training your dog is the newspaper method. In its simplest terms newspaper training involves laying down newspapers in a certain corner of the house, maybe the extra bathroom or utility room, and getting your dog to only do his duty there. Some dogs get so excited when you come home or they meet someone new or another dog that they loose control and wet themselves and who ever may be around them. By properly house breaking your dog he will learn bladder control even in the most exciting or stressful of situations.
Potty training will take some time and patience. How fast your dog learns will also depend on how much effort you put into it and the type of dog you have. Some breeds just pick up on it quicker and are much easier to train. In the end having a potty trained dog will make both you and your furry friend much happier.

Dog Training Spray Collar - Pain Free Tips to Stop Dog Barking
Many dog owners are getting fantastic results using a spray bark collar but you need to be aware of how to best use them.
Using an anti bark spray collar will normally reduce your dog's nuisance barking, and without you even having to be there to train your dog in person. Nowadays the technology they build into the anti bark spray collars includes a microphone that releases a citronella spray when you dog starts barking - all on autopilot for you.

But you are likely to discover that this kind of pain therapy is less effective than spray and the pain of shock treatments may just make your dog anxious and aggressive, and can in fact make the problem behaviour even worse as a result.
But a citronella dog collar simply sprays the neck to release an unfamiliar scent, that interrupts the dogs pattern of behaviour and distracts them long enough to break their old patterns.
It is a great remote-control reinforcement when you are also there to verbally reprimand them, so that they soon learn to associate the smell with your verbal commands and you won't need to be there to stop barking. But it also helps to reinforce your verbal commands, as the dog will remember the 'unpleasant' smell of citronella when you need to tell it to stop barking, long after it has stopped wearing the collar.
The dog training citronella anti bark spray collar can also be used with any breed of dog, as long as it weighs 6 pounds (3 kilos) or more and is aged six months or older.
The only main reason to not use a collar like this is when a dog is suffering from anxiety related barking, as they need actual behaviour modification training and confidence building to make them feel more secure and confident. In those cases, any of the anti-bark dog collars should not be used. Get a dog trainer to help you with advice for how to support your dog through this period of anxiety, as their expertise is what is required in cases like that.
In most cases with medium to large sized dogs using an anti bark spray collar is a simple and humane way to train your dog to stop barking, and you just need to use commonsense in how you use it with your dog.
When you first get the collar, make sure it is only fitted on the dog when you are there to supervise it and make sure that it is operating correctly. Occasionally a defective sprayer or over-sensitive microphone could cause constant spraying to your dog when it is not barking at all, so make sure your dog is not being sprayed needlessly.
Remove the collar when the dog is normally quiet, for instance if it sleeps inside at night and doesn't bark, then there is no need to leave the collar on. Sometimes other noises or a sensitive microphone on the collar can result in wasted citronella when the dog was not barking, so remove the collar for the hours of the day or night when it is not essential for the training. Remember to turn OFF the spray mechanism to preserve the battery life when you remove the collar, otherwise you will be replacing batteries unnecessarily.
Most users of these anti barking collars highly recommend them, especially compared to electric shock collars that use pain aversion therapy as a training too. If you and your dog find the citronella too extreme you can even get scent free spray collars to help your dog stop barking.
It certainly is a big improvement on the bucket of water by the back door that I used to train my first dog with 35 years ago! Most of the time we both ended up soaked and miserable, and all that old fashioned way of training dogs to stop barking really achieved was to make my dog hate water and make giving him a bath nearly impossible. I really wish this training system had been around back then as I know we would both have been much happier using this method.

Train Your Pet: Basic Dog Training Principles
Here are some basic principles that all dog owners need to learn and follow:
1. Be consistent. A behavior is either acceptable or it isn't. It can't be acceptable on alternate Tuesdays when you're in the mood. For example, it can't be OK to allow your dog to jump all over you on the weekends when you're in casual clothes, but not during the week when you're dressed for work. That's an obvious one, although you'd be amazed how many people I've met who do exactly that.
Here's one that's less obvious. It can't be OK for your dog to chew fabric toys but not to chew "inappropriate" fabric items. In other words, if you give your dog an old sock and say, "Here, chew this," don't be surprised when she eats your shirt. Consistency is a bit easier for singles or couples, and toughest for families. The more people who interact with the dog, the greater the likelihood of inconsistency. I strongly recommend that families conduct a few meetings to discuss and agree upon what will be universally unacceptable behavior on the part of the dog.
Everyone needs to clearly understand what the rules will be for a training program to be most successful. That being said, we live in the real world and I recognize how difficult consistency on the part of a six-year-old child will likely be. Parents of younger children will need to practice a fair amount of prevention and understand that the dog's training process may be a little bit more difficult and prolonged.
2. Be consistent. Yes, I know I already said this, but consistency also extends to obedience commands. If you want your dog to learn to listen to obedience commands the first time they're given, you need to be prepared to properly teach your dog to obey them the first time. This is most effectively accomplished if the initial foundation-level obedience you teach around the house is done off leash.
I have sometimes run into problems when discussing how important it is for dogs to obey commands consistently. In my opinion, this is an area where attitudes have gone downhill in the last 30 years. Decades ago the idea that a dog needed to obey commands the first time they were given would not have drawn comment. Today, there are many owners who are uncomfortable with the idea that their dog should be trained to respond so predictably.
I've had owners object, based on the idea that they did not want their dogs "to become robots." It is important for these owners to understand that, first of all, if training is primarily done with compassion and reward this will not happen; and second of all, you might not care if your dog listens on the first command until the very first time she runs out into the street. Then, as cars are barreling toward her, you will pray she listens on the first command, because you may never get a second one.
The specifics of how to teach foundation-level obedience off leash can be found in Chapter 7 of this book. However, the principles of consistency really need to be understood here.
3. Understand why behaviors take place and deal with problems by dealing with the cause. When owners learn to do this, they will not just be reacting to what are often symptoms of an underlying problem.
4. Learn basic training techniques and then follow rules one and two. All owners need to understand the principles of prevention, maintenance, redirection, reward and correction. And they need to use them consistently. Now that you have an understanding of some of the challenges, let's discuss a little bit about behavior, so that everyone can be clear what terms such as "prevention," "maintenance," "redirection" and "reward" really mean. Once you understand how a dog learns, we can get on to the business of training.

Dog Training - 5 Common Mistakes People Often Make When Training Their Dogs
Dog training is all about the relationship you have with your dog. In the same way that humans have problems with relationships, the relationship between you and your dog is of vital importance in successful obedience training.
Here are five common mistakes many people make.
(1) Lack of consistency in your behavior. Your dog must learn to trust you. In order for the dog to trust you it is important for you to be consistent in your training. There must be consistency in your rewards and reprimands. If the dog is reprimanded for something it has done wrong, you must not allow it to get away with the action one day and then reprimand harshly the next for the same action.
(2) Lack of communication. The dog must be quite sure why it has been reprimanded - and of course why it is being rewarded. Do not take it for granted that the dog understands what it has been told. If you have any doubt that the dog does not fully understand the way you want it to act, repeat the lesson over and over again. A dog, in many ways, is like a two year old child. Be patient in your training. Don't assume the dog understands what you want it to do.
(3) Unnecessary punishment. If your dog has run away when called and eventually returns to you, don't make the mistake of reprimanding the dog harshly. Also, in training, modulate the tone of your reprimand depending on the severity of the disobedient behavior. If you are going to shout loudly and angrily for a minor offense what are you going to do when the dog does something more serious?
(4) Starting training too late. Don't make the mistake of starting training too late. Start basic obedience when it is still a pup. Use mild reprimands with a very young, but even at a very early age the pup must know what it can do and what it is not allowed to do. Gently but firmly should be the guideline.
(5) Too much reassurance for shyness and nervous behavior. At a certain stage of it's development the pup may show signs of nervousness and uncertainty. Don't make the mistake of patting and coddling your dog - or even giving it a food reward - to re-assure it that there is nothing to worry about. It will take this as a sign that this behavior is acceptable. Speak to it in a matter-of-fact, unconcerned tone of voice.

My dog won't walk on a leash!
This is a common problem, when a dog won't walk on a leash. Okay, maybe the dog will walk, but not the way you want him to? The main reason for this behavior is because your dog doesn't respect you. I know that sounds harsh, but it's the truth. Remember that dogs are pack animals and behave as such. Your dog is looking for the alpha dog, which is supposed to be you. If you don't exhibit alpha behavior, your dog will assume that role and will walk you around the block. If your dog pulls, lunges, walks too fast or too slow, it's because they have figured out that they are in charge and go when and where they want during your walk. To correct this, start by shortening the leash to force the dog to walk beside you. Ideally you want him to walk slightly behind you, but you may have to work up to this. Also, make the dog walk on the same side of you every time. This again establishes dominance and will make your dog more compliant.

When your dog was a puppy and came running over, jumping on your knees, did you bend down and pet him? If you did, you taught him to jump up to get affection. Your dog doesn't realize that he's gouging and bruising you, he's literally jumping for joy. What to do? This is the easy part. To stop this behavior, just turn your back to your dog. Remember that your dog is a pack animal and needs social acceptance. By turning your back to him, he will learn that jumping results in being shunned. Since your dogs desire is to please you, he will quickly stop jumping to regain your approval.

German Shepherd Dog Training
The German Shepherd Dog is an old breed originating in Germany and is probably one of the most versatile breeds in existence today. German Shepherd Dog training considerations:
o The German Shepherd Dog is highly intelligent and easy to train, given the right circumstances. He will not accept high levels of repetition and can easily become bored. If he finds you boring as trainer, he will create his own entertainment. You can train him in performance events like: obedience, rally, agility, herding, tracking, and Schutzhund. He excels in all areas. You should attend basic obedience classes at a young age and continue to train him from there.
o To train a German Shepherd Dog, focus on positive reinforcement and motivation. Once you know what motivates your dog, this is what will become his reward for learning. There is never any need for physical force in training.
o German Shepherds need strong leaders or they will lead you. The German Shepherd Dog is a not a Labrador and with good reason! He demands respect from his owner, and you should respect the dog. Becoming a strong leader means nothing more than establishing rules and boundaries from day one with your dog. Example of rules could be: increasing impulse control and patience with calmly sitting and waiting for dinner or to go outside; focused eye contact before a toy is thrown; a wait at a boundary line when guests enter the house. There are as many rules available as you can think of, and the dogs will thrive under this situation.
o While establishing rules, it is important to avoid all the 'myths' related to being an Alpha. There is no need to dominance roll your dog, and in fact, your dog may view this as threatening and bite you!
o The German Shepherd Dog makes an excellent guardian, but this is instinctual and no training is required. DO NOT ever attempt to 'train' in aggression!
o Pure aggression is not desirable in the German Shepherd Dog. Aggression comes from poor genetics, lack of socialization, or lack of training. Some dogs are genetically aggressive, but the more common cases come from lack of training and socialization. German Shepherds are bred to be aloof and suspicious of strangers. Without the proper socialization, they are unable to determine friend from foe. Many cases of dog aggression, territorial aggression, and stranger aggression can and do result from this improper training and socialization.
o German Shepherds can be known to chase anything that moves. Some have more prey drive than others, but know that early training is required to teach your dog to not chase cats, small dogs, or children. He should be taught a 'leave it' and an immediate 'come.'
German Shepherd Dog training should be fun! They are so highly intelligent that training them is a real pleasure. Remember that early and on-going socialization, setting rules, thorough training, and being a respected leader are the most important things when training this breed.
